Jobs and Resumes

Tips for Candidates:

  • Wear clear, red or neutral nail polish or none at all.  Do not wear black or very dark nail polish.
  • No visible piercings other than your ears for women.  None for men.  Do not wear too much jewelry.
  • Dress conservatively.
  • Arrive at least 10 minutes early.  Many people will not even consider you if you are late or reschedule the interview.
  • Never use profanity at any time during the interview or in the workplace.
  • Never make sexual comments in the interview or in the workplace.
  • Send a thank you card in the mail within 24 hours of the interview.  Average candidates send an email but the best candidates take the time to hand write a nice note and mail it immediately.
  • Be sure to obtain a business card from the person interviewing you so you will have their mailing address.
  • Know the company.  You should have already visited and studied their website thoroughly and researched them on the internet.  Be ready to tell them why you wish to work for them.
  • Make a list of why you are the best person for the job and be confident when expressing some of these reasons during the interview.
  • Practice your handshake.  It should not be too firm or too limp.
  • Wear little or no fragrance.
  • If you have tattoos, be sure to hide them when interviewing and be prepared that you may be required to do this on the job as well.
  • Hygiene is extremely important.  Brush your teeth, take a shower, and wash your hair.  Obviously these are things that employers will expect you to do on a daily basis once you are employed.
  • When it comes to make up, go easy on it.  Too much make up is never attractive.
  • No short skirts, low cut blouses, or skin tight clothing.  Plan on not wearing these once you are hired either.
  • Keep some mints on hand and don't chew gum either in the interview or at work.  Chomping on a piece of gum is not attractive at any time.
  • Be sure to take a copy of your resume with you to the interview.  If you know that you will be meeting with more than one person, take several copies of your resume with you in the event someone needs one.
  • If you are a smoker, try not to smoke for several hours prior to your interview.  Smoke breath and smoke clothing smell are not attractive in the interview or in the workplace.
  • You should be wearing anti-perspirant deodorant every day of your adult life.
  • Men should wear underpinning with all shirts.  This means you should be wearing a plain white short-sleeved t-shirt under your dress shirt in any kind of weather.  Anytime you are wearing any type of shirt you should have on underpinning, regardless of whether you are wearing a jacket or not.
  • Men should always wear a tie.  The company will let you know if it is acceptable not to wear one once you are hired.
  • Once you get the job, always dress well at work.  If everyone else dresses more casual, then you dress more professional.  Having a polished image may help you in your future.

Good luck!
